Eyewitnesses have described the moments following the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff members in Washington, DC, providing insight into the behavior of the suspect, identified as a 30-year-old man from Chicago.
Paige Siegel, an eyewitness, told CNN that she briefly spoke with the suspect, identified as Elias Rodriguez, before realizing he was involved in the incident.
“I went up to him and asked if he was okay, as he muttered ‘call the police’ again and again. He said he was okay. Then I asked if he was shot, he said he wasn’t,” Siegel recalled.
“He was so shaken when I spoke to him that he seemed harmless. Obviously, I didn’t know at the time,” she said.
Shortly after the encounter, she said, police arrived and Rodriguez was apprehended while shouting "Free Palestine!"
Another unnamed witness, speaking to Fox News, said Rodriguez entered the building near the scene after reportedly stashing a firearm in nearby bushes.
“He was covered in rain. He was clearly in trauma. He was in shock. And some of the people at the event brought him water. They sat him down. ‘Are you okay? Were you shot? What happened?’ He's like, ‘somebody call the cops. Bring the cops in.’ So about 10 minutes later, when the cops actually came in, he said, I did this,” the witness was quoted by Fox News as saying.
The same witness said a friend who had seen security footage of the shooting described the suspect “executing” the two embassy staffers with multiple gunshots from behind.
Another eyewitness, Sara Marinuzzi, told CNN that Rodriguez appeared to pose as a bystander once inside the museum adjacent to the shooting scene. She said he waited for more than 10 minutes before reportedly telling officers he carried out the attack “for Gaza.”
Upon arrest, eyewitnesses said Rodriguez pulled out a red keffiyeh from his pocket and began chanting “Free Palestine” as officers took him into custody.
