The Trump administration has informed Israel that the US will not participate directly in any Israeli military operation against Iran's nuclear facilities, the Axios news site reported Thursday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
Washington privately conveyed to Israel that it would be alone in such an action and it won't be a joint operation, particularly regarding bombing and offensive activities, sources said.
The US administration has maintained its preference for diplomatic solutions to the nuclear standoff.
It is not clear whether the US would provide intelligence or logistical support to Israel.
US or Israeli officials did not immediately confirm or deny the report.
The Israeli military remains on high alert for potential Iranian confrontation, with The Washington Post suggesting that strikes could occur as early as Sunday if negotiations in Oman on Iran’s nuclear program fail.
US President Donald Trump acknowledged Thursday that an Israeli attack "could very well happen," cautioning about a possible "massive conflict."
Iran has reportedly prepared a counterstrike plan involving hundreds of ballistic missiles targeting Israel in case of an attack, the New York Times reported.
Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh also warned Wednesday that all US regional bases fall within missile range and would face strikes "without hesitation" if a conflict breaks out.
Amid these expectations, Washington has ordered non-emergency personnel to depart Baghdad, while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized the voluntary departure of military dependents across Middle East locations.
Sunday's scheduled talks in Muscat will focus on Iran's uranium enrichment program, with the outcome potentially determining whether diplomacy continues.
