Malaysian premier urges diplomacy for 'comprehensive resolution' amid Israel-Iran ceasefire

ISTANBUL

Malaysia's prime minister on Tuesday called for diplomacy to achieve a “comprehensive resolution” in response to the ceasefire announced earlier in the day between Iran and Israel.

Anwar Ibrahim made the comments during a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in which they discussed the latest developments in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

Anwar said that Malaysia welcomes Iran’s willingness to pursue peace with the US and Israel, “provided that the principles of justice are upheld,” according to a post on his X account.

Anwar said diplomacy and dialogue are the only viable path to achieving a “comprehensive resolution” to prevent prolonged conflict.

He reiterated Malaysia’s condemnation of Israeli attacks on Iran and Gaza, while recognizing Iran’s right to respond to any form of aggression that violates its sovereignty.

In response, the Iranian president confirmed that his country is prepared to cease military action and welcome peace, provided that Israel halts its attacks on Palestine and Iran.

A ceasefire between Israel and Iran took effect at 0400GMT Tuesday, ending the 12-day war.

However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz later ordered renewed strikes on Tehran, alleging Iran had violated the truce, a claim Iran denied, warning it would respond to any future attacks.

The ceasefire was initially announced by US President Donald Trump, who said it would involve a phased halt to operations – with Iran beginning the ceasefire first and Israel following 12 hours later. A full end to hostilities was to be declared at the 24-hour mark.

Tuesday’s truce follows a dramatic escalation of tensions on Monday with Iran launching a barrage of missiles at the US military’s Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, in retaliation for US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday.

The US attacks came as part of a US-backed Israeli military assault on Iran that began on June 13 and prompted Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks on Israel.
