Lithuania's former central banker becomes President

- New president will take office on July 12

The former central bank board member and economist Gitanas Nauseda won Lithuania鈥檚 presidential election on Sunday after his opponent Ingrida Simonyte conceded, according to local sources on Monday.

Nauseda secured around 65% of the votes while Simonyte received 32%.

According to the Baltic news agency Delfi, the president-elect said that he would soften the rhetoric towards Russia, but stressed that Lithuania鈥檚 relations with Russia would not change substantially until Moscow alters its behavior towards Ukraine.

He also vowed to work with parliament and the government to reduce the social divide in the country.

Nauseda will take office on July 12 after an inauguration ceremony.

Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite, who was ineligible to run after completion two terms in office, congratulated the newly-elected president on his win.
