Amazon to invest $13B in expanding Australia鈥檚 data centers by 2029

Amazon will invest AU$20 billion ($13 billion) over the next four years to expand and operate data centers in Australia, the nation鈥檚 prime minister said Sunday.

鈥淲e鈥檙e taking advantage of the AI revolution 鈥� the Australian way. Amazon Web Services鈥� $20 billion investment in data centres in Australia will set us up for the future, boosting our economy and productivity,鈥� Anthony Albanese wrote on X.

Amazon said the investment, the largest global technology commitment publicly announced in Australia, will support growing demand for cloud computing and AI, boost AI adoption and capabilities, and drive modernization across Australian businesses of all sizes.

鈥淭his is a huge vote of confidence in the Australian economy,鈥� Albanese added.

The tech giant will also invest in three solar farms in the northeastern states of Victoria and Queensland, securing over 170 megawatts of renewable energy capacity.

According to Australia鈥檚 Department of Industry, Science and Resources, AI and automation will boost the nation鈥檚 GDP by up to AU$600 billion ($391 billion) annually by 2030.

Leading tech firms globally are boosting infrastructure to meet the growing demand for generative AI and cloud computing.
