Total announces zero carbon emission goal by 2050

- Firm aims to cut carbon and net zero emissions in three steps from its operations and energy products sold to Europe

French energy giant Total plans to cut carbon emissions to reach a net-zero emission level by 2050 in support of the EU鈥檚 carbon neutrality target, the company announced Tuesday.

In a statement, the company foresees three major steps to achieve its goal:-

1. Net-zero emissions across Total鈥檚 worldwide operations by 2050

2. Net-zero emissions across all its production and energy products used by its customers in Europe, including the UK and Norway by 2050

3. 60% or more reduction in the average carbon intensity of energy products used worldwide by Total customers by 2050.

鈥淓nergy markets are changing, driven by climate change, technology and societal expectations. Total is committed to helping solve the dual challenge of providing more energy with fewer emissions,鈥 Patrick Pouyanne, chairman of the company, was quoted as saying in the statement.

Pouyanne pointed to the EU鈥檚 target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and vowed his company would take an 鈥渆xemplary鈥 role leading the way for other regions to become carbon neutral over time.
