India oil giant starts ultra-low suplhur fuel delivery

- Move expected to decrease sulphur levels five-fold compared to BS-IV levels in bid to alleviate air pollution problem

India鈥檚 largest oil company has started supplies of cleaner petrol and diesel throughout the country two weeks before the introduction of a new regulation on Euro-VI emission compliant fuels, according to local reports on Sunday.

Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has begun dispensing ultra-low sulphur fuel in all of its 28,000 petrol pumps before the April 1 deadline.

Last month, the country鈥檚 oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan said BS-VI, which is equivalent to compressed natural gas (CNG) in terms of providing clean energy, is expected to decrease sulphur levels five-fold compared to BS-IV in a bid to alleviate the air pollution problem in the country.

"We have successfully rolled out the supply of BS-VI grade fuel across the country," said IOC Chairman Sanjiv Singh.
