US international industrial service company and one of the world's largest oil field services companies, Baker Hughes, acquired Mosaic Materials Inc. on Wednesday to further develop and scale its next-generation capture technology for carbon dioxide (CO2).
Mosaic's metal-organic framework technology is a proprietary adsorbent material that acts as a high-capacity molecular sponge to selectively capture CO2.
Baker Hughes will develop and scale Mosaic's innovative technology, enabling direct air capture of CO2 to reduce its emissions from refining, aviation, shipping, municipalities, steel and cement manufacturing.
Such investments in developing carbon capture and removal technologies is necessary to meet climate goals and emission reduction targets.
"Creating economical, scalable and energy-efficient direct air capture systems that can effectively capture CO2 from the atmosphere is important for supply into the CO2 utilization market, including eFuels," Baker Hughes said.
Mosaic鈥檚 technology is the latest addition to Baker Hughes' portfolio of carbon capture utilization and storage solutions, which includes post-combustion capture, compression, subsurface storage and long-term integrity and monitoring.
