Canada approves Woodside's LNG export licence

- National Energy Board of Canada approved an energy firm's application to export over 800 billion cubic meters in 25 years

Canada's National Energy Board approved the application of energy company,ÌýWoodside Energy Holdings Pty Ltd.,Ìýon ThursdayÌýto export liquefied natural gas.Ìý

Woodside Energy Holdings Pty Ltd. was granted aÌýnatural gas export license forÌý25 years,Ìýfor a maximumÌýquantity of 807Ìýbillion cubic meters.Ìý

The export point will be the Grassy Point LNG facility of Woodside EnergyÌýon the west coast ofÌýBritish Columbia near the Pacific Ocean.Ìý

UponÌýcompletion, Woodside'sÌýproject is planned to produce between 6 to 15 million tonnes per annum (8 - 10 billion cubic meters per year) of LNG,Ìýand laterÌýto increase overall capacity up to 20 million tonnes per annum (27 billion cubic meters per year) of LNG.Ìý

The early estimated capital costÌýof the project is between $10-15 billion (around US$8-12 billion), accordingÌýto company website.

Canada has 18 proposed projects to export LNG, however soÌýfarÌýno investment decision has been finalized on any project becauseÌýof theÌýuncertainty of tax and environmental laws in the country.Ìý

National Energy Board, which is the federal regulator ofÌýCanada's energy industry, stated that the quantity of natural gas to be exported out of the countryÌýmust beÌýsurplus to Canadian requirements.

Canada's proved natural gas reserves are estimated to be 67 trillion cubic feet (twoÌýtrillion cubic meters) while it hasÌýan estimated technically recoverable shale gas resources of 573Ìýtrillion cubic feet (17Ìýtrillion cubic meters), according to the U.S. agency

According to the U.S.' Energy Information Administration, CanadaÌýis the fourth-largest exporter of natural gas -Ìýafter Russia, Qatar, and Norway -Ìýwhile almost all of itsÌýnatural gas exports are sent to the U.S.Ìývia pipelines.Ìý
