French energy giant Total abandoned its controversial聽shale gas exploration project in northern Denmark as it failed to find sufficient deposits of gas/oil, according to Danish energy agency聽Monday.
Danish media reported that the Danish Energy Agency announced聽late Monday that Total decided to pull out of its project in Jutland which is now聽permanently shut down.
"The drilling results have not fulfilled the company鈥檚 expectations of the reservoir conditions and seam thickness. There will therefore be no further work with the聽drilling, which is now shut down permanently,"聽the Energy Agency said.
Total said in May that it abandoned its shale gas exploration in New聽Zealand for the same reason.
The French company was granted an exploration聽license聽in June 2014 to explore in聽Jutland which became a center of anti-fracking聽protests.
Greenpeace and the Danish Society of Nature Conservation聽protested against聽the projects in the region.
Danish Energy and Climate Minister Lars Christian Lilleholt announced Monday that no聽new shale gas exploration projects will be approved in Denmark any time soon.
