LPG for clean transportation

LPG could be a viable alternative fuel for the transport sector to reduce carbon emissions, according to Alan Whitaker, a specialist in power and carbon markets from Oslo on Thursday.

LPG could be a viable alternative fuel for the transport sector to reduce carbon emissions,聽according to聽Alan Whitaker, a specialist in power and carbon markets from Oslo on Thursday.

LPG聽is a聽low-carbon alternative to conventional fossil fuels. Its combustion emits 33 percent less CO2 than coal and 15 percent less than heating oil, according to the French Agency for Environment and Energy Management.

LPG is a cleaner fuel than petroleum and gasoline for the environment, Whitaker told聽The Anadolu Agency on the sidelines of聽the sixth Annual Baltic Energy Summit聽in Helsinki.

\"Fuel in the transport sector is quite difficult to decarbonize, which is perhaps why LPG is being considered as an option.聽But we shouldn鈥檛 forget that there are choices like biofuel, battery technologies and electric cars which are far better than all kinds of fossil fuels,\"聽Whitaker added.

According to Whitaker, the EU鈥檚 targets are somewhat聽uncertain and he says聽a global agreement is needed. He said that in Europe, the use of carbon and its resulting聽emissions should be charged as a deterrent for their use.

聽\"If Europe wants to decarbonize,聽essentially we need some kind of charge for carbon whether true market price or through tax. That means it will be more costly to produce industrial units and聽industry in聽the EU聽will be affected by this decision,\"聽he stressed.

Whitaker explained that聽with a carbon charge, it could聽be less competitive for Europe to compete with countries that do not have such a聽system in place like聽India or China.

\"While the targets and Europe鈥檚 intentions are clear, I think for them to be sustainable,聽a global agreement is needed,\"聽he said.聽

Carbon emissions became a聽current issue聽for the energy sector after聽EU member countries聽agreed to decrease聽the聽emissions聽by 40 percent by 2030. The deal was agreed聽during their meeting in Brussels on Oct. 24.
