North-south gas corridor report ends Istanbul energy summit

- Summit ends with discussion of new gas facility in Europea that would 're-energize U.S.-European relations,' one participant says.

The SixthÌýAtlantic Council Energy and EconomicÌýSummit held in IstanbulÌýhas ended with discussion of aÌýreport on the North-South Gas Corridor.Ìý

The report focuses onÌýthe impactÌýof the North-South Gas Corridor,Ìýwhich is planned to deliver natural gasÌýin Central andÌýEasternÌýEurope, running from Poland in the north through the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Croatia toÌýthe south.ÌýÌý

"The North-South Corridor wouldÌýstrengthen Europe's competitivenessÌýand re-energize U.S.-European relations," saidÌýJames L. Jones, the founding Chairman ofÌýBrent Scowcroft Center on International Security at theÌýAtlantic Council.

The corridor is eventually to carry electricity and other types of energy as well.Ìý

On the second and last day of the summit, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Ali BabacanÌýalso gaveÌýa speech about global economic recovery, focusing onÌýTurkey's G20 presidency next year,Ìýfiscal reforms, and stimulatingÌýgrowth in slow-moving economies.Ìý

During the two day summit, theÌýU.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz, several heads of state, energy andÌýeconomy ministers wereÌýjoined by around 300 leaders from the fields of business andÌýacademia.Ìý
