The Kremlin and Beijing will negotiate the western route of the Power of Siberia natural gas project during the visit of Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli to Russia in May, Russian news agency Tass reported on Monday.
"First Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China will pay a visit in May to focus on the energy dialogue. I think this should be the highlight," stated Stanislav Voskresensky, Russian deputy of the Economic Development Ministry.
Last September, Russian energy giant Gazprom and China National Petroleum Company (CNPC) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to supply gas from Russia to China via the western route of the Power of Siberia project.
The anticipated capacity of the western route ranges from 28 to 35 billion cubic meters per annum.
The Power of Siberia project consists of two routes, eastern and western. The eastern route is currently in its development stage to transit gas from the natural gas fields in Eastern Siberia, including the Chayanda and Kovykta gas fields. The western route will supply 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas via pipeline from Yamal-Nenets autonomous region to northwest China for a period of 30 years.
Both routes of the project, western and eastern, plan to be operational by 2019.
