Russian energy producer Rosneft has delivered the first of nine batches of liquefied natural gas (LNG) within the framework of a contract with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), the company announced on Friday.
According to the statement released by the company, the first LNG delivery of Rosneft's history was successfully made to the Ain Sokhna port in Egypt.
Rosneft does not yet produce LNG and the delivery of this batch was purchased from spot markets.
Having a presence in the global LNG sector has been increasingly important for Rosneft in recent years, and the company has been stepping up efforts to start producing LNG. As part of this strategy, the company inked a deal with American Exxon Mobile in 2014 to build a plant on the Pacific island of Sakhalin in Russia to start producing LNG, which is planned to be completed in late 2018.
While the cargo tonnage was not specified, the delivery was in accordance with the agreement with EGAS signed in August last year.
