Poland's first nuclear power plant to cost $20 billion

- US company Westinghouse will build country's first nuclear power plant, PM says

US company Westinghouse will build Poland's first nuclear power plant at a cost of approximately $20 billion, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki revealed on Wednesday.

Morawiecki explained the procedure to journalists, saying that Warsaw has been working hard for nearly 5 years in preparation for the decision to invest in nuclear energy.

Under the Polish government's energy strategy, the country will build six nuclear power units with a total capacity of between 6 and 9 gigawatts (GW).

The first plant will be located in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino coastal region in the north of the country.

The first reactor will start operating in 2033 and generate 1-1.6 GW of power. Subsequent reactors will be built every two years.

He confirmed that two more nuclear power plants will be built, relaying 鈥渘ot only on proven technologies but also on proven partners.鈥�

An agreement with South Korea has been made for the second plant and plans are afoot for the third plant, he confirmed.
