Poland vows to cut all oil imports from Russia by end of 2022

- Country also banned imports of Russian coal and will impose financial penalties on all Polish private entities importing coal from Russia

Poland on Wednesday announced its plan to wean off Russian oil imports by the end of 2022.

Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Poland's reliance on Russian oil has already been significantly decreased and the steps the country announced would be the most radical plan among European nations to wean off Russian energy sources.

Morawiecki said all natural gas imports would be cut by May and oil imports by the end of 2022 as "money from oil and gas exports feeds Russia."

He urged the European Commission to levy tax on all hydrocarbons imported from Russia for a "fair" trade.

Poland said Tuesday it was banning imports of Russian coal.

The country also vowed to impose financial penalties on all Polish private entities importing coal from Russia.
