Global offshore wind capacity hits 83 GW, powering 73 million homes

- Additional 48 GW of offshore wind capacity is currently under construction, industry report says

Global offshore wind power capacity reached 83 gigawatts (GW) by the end of 2024, generating enough electricity to supply 73 million households, according to the 2025 Global Offshore Wind Report published by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) on Wednesday.

The report highlights that 2024 was the hottest year on record, with average global temperatures surpassing the critical 1.5掳C threshold on an annual basis for the first time.

"Offshore wind stands out among renewable energy sources for its vast development potential, higher capacity factors, and stronger economic impact in the fight against climate change and global warming," the report indicates.

According to GWEC, an additional 48 GW of offshore wind capacity is currently under construction worldwide.

Despite the progress, 8 GW of new offshore wind capacity was connected to the grid in 2024, a 26% drop compared to 2023.

The report highlights that China, Europe, and North America led the way in capacity additions last year, underscoring offshore wind鈥檚 growing role in global energy and economic development.
