Rosneft, Gazprom to gain licenses for Arctic: Official

Ìý

Russian state-run energy giants Rosneft and Gazprom will be granted licenses to explore oil and natural gas atÌýfour fields inÌýRussianÌýArctic, a Russian official said Wednesday.Ìý

"Rosneft and Gazprom will soon receive new licenses forÌýthe development ofÌýfour fields onÌýthe shelf,"ÌýMinister ofÌýNatural ResourcesÌýSergei Donskoi said,Ìýaccording to RussianÌýnews agency Sputnik.Ìý

Reminding that the government proposed in April to suspend approving licenses from Russian Arctic, Donskoi said his ministry continues to work as usual until a final decision is made by Moscow.Ìý

"The proposal [to suspend issuing shelf licenses] has been considered, butÌýwe continue toÌýissue licenses underÌýthe current legislation.ÌýToday, the law stipulates the noncompetitive issuing ofÌýlicenses toÌýdevelop fields onÌýthe shelf," Sputnik quoted him saying.Ìý

MoscowÌýproposed in April toÌýsuspendÌýissuing oil and gas licenses for exploration and extraction inÌýRussianÌýshelf deposits, untilÌýa final decision was made aboutÌýgiving private companies access toÌýthe Russian shelf,ÌýSputnik noted.Ìý

ÌýRosneft and Gazprom are the only two state-owned companies in the country that are givenÌýlicenses toÌýexplore oil and gas in Russia'sÌýArctic shelf.

A joint venture betweenÌýRosneft and U.S. oil giant ExxonMobil announced discovering huge oil resources in Kara Sea atÌýthe ArcticÌýlast year onÌýSeptember. However, due to the western sanctions on Russia, the U.S. energy company had to withdraw from the region a month later.Ìý
