Turkey and West Africa's electricity regulators sign MoU

- Energy Market Regulatory Board of Turkey and regional regulator for cross-border electricity interconnections in West Africa, sign memorandum of understanding

The electricity market regulators for Turkey and West Africa signed a memorandum of understanding in Baku,聽Azerbaijan聽on Monday.聽

The heads of Turkey's Energy Market Regulatory Board, EMRA, and the聽ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority, ERERA, the regional regulator for cross-border electricity interconnections in West Africa,聽met during the 13th Energy Investment聽and Regulation Conference in Baku and agreed to sign聽a memorandum of understanding, MoU, regarding partnership in聽electricity regulation.

The partnership involves the sharing of information, experience and specialist knowledge, according to EMRA president Mustafa Yilmaz who spoke during a meeting at the conference.

"The partnership also includes the sharing of information regarding future activities in each side's fields of interest, mutual support of these activities, strengthening corporate capacity and hosting joint activities," Yilmaz said.

With different聽partnerships including EU聽institutions,聽EMRA has learned and incorporated聽new governance into its own regulations as well as impacting its partners, he said.聽

"We see the partnership with ERERA not just as a聽way of transferring knowledge and experience,聽but also as a strong desire to learn together and improve," Yilmaz聽said.

The African countries involved in West Africa's regulatory board are valued by the Turkish regulator, according to Yilmaz.

"This memorandum of understanding is a clear sign of how the Turkish government is open to supporting聽Africa and its interests," he added.
