Smart meters will contribute to a 25% carbon emission saving in U.K. homes by 2035, according to a new report by independent smart meter data company Smart Energy GB on Thursday.
The meters will help consumers reduce emissions by decreasing their energy demand, enabling dynamic pricing tariffs to support low carbon electric heating, promoting improved measurement of energy efficiency performance and supporting new business models for buying low carbon heating.
Energy use in homes currently accounts for 14% of U.K. greenhouse gas emissions.
Smart meters are an integral part of a flexible, decentralized and decarbonized energy system.
Without smart meters, reducing carbon emissions and meeting the U.K.鈥檚 climate change targets will be expensive, less supportive of renewable generation and less well coordinated, the company claims.
Smart metering will facilitate better integration of renewable power and reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, through efficiently managing energy supply and demand by using near-real time energy data, the report outlines.
