UK passes net zero emissions law

- Committee on Climate Change recommended net zero emission target on May 2

The U.K. passed a law committing to a target of net zero emissions by 2050, the government announced on Thursday.

The target will require that the U.K. bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, compared with the previous target of at least an 80% reduction from 1990 levels.

"Today we鈥檙e leading the world in becoming the first major economy to pass new laws to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050," Energy and Clean Growth Minister Chris Skidmore said.

The U.K.鈥檚 2050 net zero target was recommended by the Committee on Climate Change, the UK鈥檚 independent climate advisory body, on May 2.

While reducing carbon intensive activity, the country will also need to offset any emissions by schemes such as planting trees or using technology like carbon capture and storage.
