Cambridge college cuts ties with arms industry amid pressure from pro-Palestine students in UK

LONDON
King's College in Cambridge has become the first Oxbridge institution in the UK to commit to completely divesting millions of pounds from the arms industry and companies involved in Palestine's illegal occupation by the end of the calendar year, the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign (PSC) said on Tuesday.
The PSC said the college's decision to divest millions from the arms industry, as well as companies, came following ongoing pressure from students in solidarity with Palestine.
The announcement was made in an email to all students by Provost Gillian Tett after a vote by the Governing Body on Monday night, the PSC said in the statement.

Almost a year of sustained campaigning has been going on from the student activist group King's Cambridge 4 Palestine (KC4P), alongside the broader Palestinian solidarity movement.
The King’s Cambridge 4 Palestine group urged Cambridge University to follow "the example now set by one of its most renowned colleges."
"King's College's decision must trigger global condemnation of Israel's actions against the Palestinian people. KC4P stands with the Palestinian people in their fight for liberation," KC4P said in the statement.
Stella Swain, youth and student officer at the PSC, said if King's College can finally listen to its students and divest from the arms industry and companies complicit in the illegal occupation of Palestine, then every university can act to ensure they are on the right side of history.
"This is a massive victory, and speaks to the incredible power and commitment of student campaigning at King's College and across the country," she added.
Citing PSC research that found that UK universities collectively invest nearly £460 million (approximately $614 million) "in companies complicit in Israel's genocide, military occupation, and apartheid," however, Swain noted that more and more universities are listening to their students and cutting all investments.
The Israeli army resumed its assaults on the Gaza Strip on March 18 and has since killed 3,427 people and injured 9,647 others, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
