Recognizing Palestine was one of Slovenia’s most important foreign policy decisions: Prime minister
'There is no end in sight to this horrific situation due to the ruthless policies of the Israeli government,' says Robert Golob

ISTANBUL
Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob described on Wednesday that his country’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine as one of the most significant and noble foreign policy actions in Slovenian history.
In a statement issued on the first anniversary of the recognition, Golob said: "One year ago, the Slovenian National Assembly took one of the most important and noble foreign policy decisions in the country’s history."
He called the move a "strong political and symbolic step" that supports the two-state solution as the only path to peace and coexistence in the Middle East.
"The existence of a Palestinian state is a fundamental precondition for that peace," Golob added.
He stressed that Slovenia recognizes the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and reiterated the country's support for a two-state solution.
Golob said that over the past year, he had held discussions with numerous world leaders on the issue of Palestine.
He condemned the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly in relation to the situation in Gaza, where Israel has killed more than 54,000 people since October 2023 and created conditions of famine, calling them “in clear contradiction with all principles of modern international society.”
"Palestinians are dying, suffering, and being humiliated; they are living in despair, hunger, and illness," Golob said. "There is no end in sight to this horrific situation due to the ruthless policies of the Israeli government."
Calling on other governments to recognize Palestine, Golob said: “Recognize Palestine without delay and contribute to a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in peace and security.”
He also called on EU institutions to act, stressing that it is now unavoidable for the bloc to respond to Israel’s violations of human rights and democratic values under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
The Slovenian parliament officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign and independent state on June 4, 2024, in line with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, based on the 1967 borders.
