Iraqi premier slams Israel's attack on Iran as breach of international law, fears regional instability
Shia al-Sudani meets with senior US officials, reiterates Iraq’s firm rejection of use of its territory or airspace for any military operations against neighboring countries

ISTANBUL
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Friday condemned Israel's attack on Iran as a violation of international law and warned that it could lead to broader conflict in the region, according to a statement from his media office.
Al-Sudani met in Baghdad with US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Steven Fagin and Maj. Gen. Kevin Leahy, commander of the international coalition against ISIS (Daesh), following Israel’s large-scale military strike targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure.
The prime minister said the attack “constitutes a blatant violation of international law and an act of aggression that undermines the foundations of the international order and threatens both regional and global security,” the statement said.
He warned that the timing of the strike, while diplomatic efforts are ongoing, reveals a "deliberate intent to escalate and drag the region into a broader confrontation rather than prevent one."
Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s firm rejection of the use of its territory or airspace for any military operations against neighboring countries, adding that the government would take all necessary legal measures to protect its sovereignty.
He also urged the United Nations Security Council to take urgent and responsible steps to reaffirm the prohibition on the use of force and prevent further regional destabilization.
According to the Iraqi government, US officials reaffirmed Washington's stated position of non-involvement in the attack and commitment to keeping Iraq out of the conflict, as outlined in the Strategic Framework Agreement between the two countries.
Israel launched a massive attack early Friday, deploying around 200 aircraft to target Iran's nuclear program and long-range missile capabilities. The strikes killed senior Iranian military officials as well as nuclear scientists.
Iran has vowed "severe punishment" and called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to hold Israel accountable for its actions.
