Protesters march through Kenyan capital, demand senior police official resign over influencer's death

NAIROBI, Kenya

Hundreds of protesters on Thursday marched through Nairobi, Kenya's capital, demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Lagat, following the death of popular schoolteacher, blogger, and X influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

Demonstrators carrying Kenyan flags and placards clogged major roads in downtown Nairobi, crippling traffic and forcing many businesses to close.

Protesters marched through the streets, many draped in Kenyan flags, chanting for justice and holding a placard that read, "Stop Killing Us."

Tensions escalated as youths hurled stones at officers, prompting police to deploy tear gas in running battles that lasted hours while protesters chanted unity slogans.

At the heart of the unrest were chants of justice for Ojwang, a schoolteacher turned online commentator, who was arrested last weekend after posting a critical comment about the deputy inspector-general.

While in police custody, he died under unclear circumstances.

The heightened public anger comes amid ongoing investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) into Ojwang’s death.

The authority has already suspended several officers linked to the case, but activists and civil society groups are demanding full accountability, including the removal of Lagat himself.

The protest's timing also coincided with the presentation of Kenya’s 2025/2026 budget by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.

The protest comes almost exactly one year after deadly anti-government demonstrations rocked Nairobi and other cities during the 2024 budget season, when anger over rising taxes and the cost of living brought thousands into the streets.

President William Ruto has condemned the incident as “heartbreaking and unacceptable” and called for a “swift, transparent, and credible investigation” into Ojwang’s death at the hands of the police.
