The UN Human Rights Office said Wednesday that a drone strike on a UN humanitarian convoy in Sudan's North Darfur state has severely impacted the delivery of aid and breached international humanitarian law.

"The deadly aerial strike this week on a UN humanitarian convoy in Al Koma, North Darfur, clearly undermines access by civilians to assistance and violates the international humanitarian law prohibition of attacks against humanitarian personnel and objects," spokesperson Seif Magango said in a statement.

The convoy was delivering critical food and nutrition supplies to El Fasher, a city under siege, when it was targeted on Monday. Five members of the convoy were killed in the attack, which the UN described as "a severe blow to civilians in the besieged city."

A separate drone strike, reportedly carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), hit a busy market in Al Koma earlier this week, killing at least 15 civilians and injuring dozens, the office said. It added that this incident comes amid reports of similar attacks by both warring sides targeting civilian objects, including markets.

"We urge all parties to the conflict to take prompt and concrete measures to protect civilians and civilian objects and to facilitate safe and unimpeded humanitarian assistance, in line with their obligations under international humanitarian law," Magango said.

He added that there must be "prompt and impartial investigations into both attacks and meaningful steps to bring those responsible to justice."

The UN World Food Program (WFP) and UNICEF on Tuesday announced that a deadly attack hit a joint humanitarian convoy in Sudan's North Darfur state.

"Multiple trucks were burned, and critical humanitarian supplies were damaged," the agencies said in a joint statement.

The convoy, comprising 15 trucks, had been en route to El-Fasher in western Sudan, where hundreds of thousands of people, including many children, are at high risk of malnutrition and starvation, according to the statement.

The UN agencies said the route had been shared in advance with parties on the ground according to standard procedure.
