Federal judge blocks deportation of family of man charged in Colorado attack

HOUSTON, United States

A federal judge in the state of Colorado on Wednesday blocked US immigration officials from deporting the family of a man accused of using Molotov cocktails to injure people attending an event supporting Israeli hostages.

"Defendants SHALL NOT REMOVE Hayem El Gamal and her five children from the District of Colorado or the United States unless or until this Court or the Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit vacates this Order," wrote Judge Gordon Gallagher in his ruling.

El Gamal is the wife of Mohamed Soliman, an Egyptian national who came to the US with his family in August 2022 and filed for asylum a month later, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Soliman is accused of attacking a rally supporting Israeli hostages in Boulder, 25 miles (40.2 kilometers) northwest of Denver.

Investigators said Soliman was armed with Molotov cocktails which he used in the attack that burned more than a dozen event-goers.

US immigration records show that his wife and children are being held at a federal detention center in Texas designed to house families with minors.

The judge set a June 13 hearing on a request for a temporary restraining order.

"The court finds that deportation without process could work irreparable harm and an order must issue without notice due to the urgency this situation presents," said Gallagher.

Soliman is charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and a federal hate crimes charge for the attack.
