Trump signs orders to bolster US drone industry, encourage supersonic flights
Presidential actions remove long-standing regulations while seeking to accelerate development

WASHINGTON
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday aimed at significantly easing restrictions on American drones, and bolstering their export abroad as the industry faces stiff competition from China.
Trump's order directs the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to rush a new rule allowing drone operators to fly the unmanned aircraft beyond their line of sight, for both commercial and public safety missions, and directs the agency's administrator to deploy AI to expedite drone waiver reviews.
It further seeks to bolster the US drone manufacturing industry by "promoting their export and taking action to ensure our technology remains secure from undue foreign influence and exploitation," the White House said in an accompanying statement.
Looming large over the president's action is China, which has developed an expansive domestic drone industry that has largely dominated the international market.
The action also calls for the establishment of an electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing integration pilot program "to accelerate the deployment of safe and lawful vertical operations in the United States, selecting at least five pilot projects to advance applications like cargo transport and medical response," the White House said.
The order was one of four signed by Trump Friday behind closed doors.
Another calls for the removal of the prohibition on flying supersonic aircraft overland, and calls for officials to instead "establish an interim noise-based certification standard." The order points to "decades of stifling regulations" that the White House says are being undone "so that US companies can dominate supersonic flight once again."
"The Order advances the coordination of supersonic research, development, test and evaluation efforts through the National Science and Technology Council with leadership from the Office of Science and Technology Policy," the White House said.
The other two orders seek to bolster US cybersecurity and ensure American airspace sovereignty.
