Trump 'doesn't want to continue' Iran strikes: Report

ISTANBUL

US President Donald Trump does not want to continue strikes against Iran and aims to secure a peace deal with Tehran following attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, Axios reported Sunday, citing an American official.

The news outlet reported that Trump called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shortly after the strikes and informed him about the outcome of the strikes, and said his next objective is to pursue an agreement with Tehran.

"The president doesn't want to continue strikes. He's ready to do it if Iran retaliates, but he told Netanyahu he wants peace," the official said.

"Americans made it clear to us they want to close this round. They don't mind if we continue our strikes, but when it comes to them, they're done," an Israeli official confirmed Trump's stance.

Coordinated military action

Israel destroyed multiple Iranian air defense systems within 48 hours before the US strike, following American requests, Israeli and American officials said.

According to the report, the US provided Israel with a list of defense systems to eliminate before the Fordo facility attack.

The US targeted Iran’s nuclear sites with six bunker-buster bombs dropped on the Fordo facility with B-2 stealth bombers, along with dozens of submarine-launched cruise missile strikes on the Natanz and Isfahan facilities.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Air Force Gen. Dan Caine said over 125 American aircraft participated in the mission, including stealth bombers, fighter jets, refueling tankers, a guided missile submarine, and surveillance aircraft.

US President Donald Trump announced that American forces conducted "very successful" strikes on the Iranian nuclear sites.

Hostilities between Tehran and Tel Aviv erupted on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes across Iran, targeting military and nuclear facilities. Iran responded with retaliatory strikes.

Israeli authorities report at least 25 killed and hundreds injured in Iranian missile attacks. Iran's Health Ministry says 430 people died and over 3,500 were wounded in Israeli assaults.
