US Middle East envoy predicts 'successful' Trump-Putin call
Steve Witkoff outlines Washington’s firm stance on Iran nuclear talks, addresses Gaza humanitarian concerns

US President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East expressed optimism about a scheduled call Monday between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing it as potentially pivotal for ongoing peace negotiations.
"I believe that the president is going to have a successful call...with Vladimir Putin," Steve Witkoff told ABC News on Sunday. "They know each other. The president is determined to get something done here...If he can't do it, then nobody can."
Trump announced Saturday on his Truth Social platform that he would speak with Putin on Monday followed by a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several NATO leaders in an aim to halt what he described as a "bloodbath" that is “killing, on average, more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week.”
Addressing Iran nuclear negotiations, Witkoff emphasized that uranium enrichment is "a very clear red line" in any potential agreement.
"We cannot allow even 1% of an enrichment capability," he said. "We've delivered a proposal to the Iranians that we think addresses some of this without disrespecting them."
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said ahead of the fifth round of talks that Tehran's enrichment program will continue with or without a deal with the US,
Regarding Gaza's humanitarian crisis, Witkoff acknowledged widespread concern while highlighting logistical challenges.
"Everyone is concerned about the humanitarian conditions in Gaza," he said. "The issue now is, how do we logistically get all of those trucks into Gaza? How do we set up the aid stations?"
Israel has blocked all supplies, including food, water and medicine, from entering Gaza since March 2 and resumed military operations on March 18 after abandoning ceasefire talks.
The Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing more than 53,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
