Prior to his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, spoke with US President Donald Trump about the situation in Ukraine.

According to a statement issued by Downing Street on Monday, the discussion late Sunday, which included the leaders of France, Germany, and Italy, focused on the war in Ukraine and its devastating human and economic costs.

The leaders expressed their support for an unconditional ceasefire and urged Moscow to take peace talks seriously.

"The leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, and the catastrophic cost of the war to both sides," it said.

"Looking ahead to President Trump’s call with President Putin tomorrow, the leaders discussed the need for an unconditional ceasefire and for President Putin to take peace talks seriously."

The group also considered further sanctions if Russia fails to engage in the process constructively.

The leaders agreed to stay in close contact as diplomatic efforts continue, according to the statement.

Trump announced Saturday on his Truth Social platform that he would speak with Putin on Monday followed by a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several NATO leaders in an aim to halt what he described as a "bloodbath" that is "killing, on average, more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week."

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday announced that Putin and Trump will speak by phone at 17:00 Moscow time (GMT1400).
