Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday met with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in Beijing and discussed bilateral ties, including enhancing cooperation in different sectors.

In a statement after the meeting, Prime Minister Luxon called his meeting with President Xi a "valuable opportunity to reflect on the depth and breadth of this important relationship."

“I outlined how our strong and innovative economic relationship has grown to cover a broad range of areas. Our trade and economic links are complementary and contribute to prosperity in both countries. These links also directly support New Zealand’s ambition to grow our economy," he said.

Luxon arrived on a three-day visit to China on Wednesday. This was his first official trip to China since taking office in November 2023.

The two leaders also discussed ways to enhance cooperation in different sectors including business, education, culture, science and people-to-people ties.

Luxon said he raised the necessity of reducing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region and the importance of “the key role” that China can play in helping to resolve global challenges such as the war in Ukraine.

The New Zealand prime minister is also expected to meet with Premier Li Qiang and National People’s Congress Chairman Zhao Leji.
