Google partners with Varaha and Charm to purchase 100,000 tons of biochar carbon removal by 2030 from each company to help scale biochar as a carbon removal solution in a bid to achieve its net zero emissions goal.
These two long term purchase agreements will help Google catalyze biochar production toward a scale that can help the planet mitigate climate change. These are the largest biochar carbon removal deals of Google to date.
By collaborating with Varaha and Charm, Google is expanding its carbon removal initiatives, which include technologies like enhanced rock weathering and direct air capture, alongside its ongoing efforts through the companies Frontier and Symbiosis.
As reported by international media, Varaha plans to purchase waste from hundreds of smallholder farms in India and use reactors to transform it into biochar, a substance capable of sequestering CO2 for centuries. Additionally, the biochar will be distributed to farmers as a sustainable alternative to fertilizers.
Charm also confirmed the agreement, emphasizing Google's leadership in aligning corporate climate action with the global goal of limiting temperature rise to sustainable levels.
Google's agreement with Charm demonstrates its commitment to carbon removal purchasing, according to the Charm.
Through offtakes facilitated by Frontier Climate, this initiative reflects a growing shift in corporate climate action, aligning more closely with the requirements for limiting climate impacts, the company Charm said.
