The first large-scale commercial e-methanol facility in the world, the Kasso e-methanol plant, has been officially inaugurated, Danish renewables group European Energy announced on Tuesday.
The facility, located in the southern Danish town of Aabenraa, was developed by European Energy and will be operated in collaboration with Japan's Mitsui & Co., the Copenhagen-based company said in a statement.
The plant is owned by Solar Park Kasso ApS under Kasso MidCo ApS, with European Energy A/S holding a 51% stake and Japan's Mitsui & Co. owning the remaining 49%, it added.
The Kasso facility is the first in the world to produce e-methanol at commercial scale, with an annual production capacity of 42,000 tonnes, and runs entirely on renewable energy, the company said.
Situated next to Northern Europe's largest solar park鈥攖he 304 megawatt Kasso Solar Park鈥攖he facility integrates large-scale renewable power generation with carbon capture and utilization. By combining biogenic CO2 with green hydrogen produced on-site, the Kasso e-methanol facility manufactures e-methanol with up to a 97% reduced carbon footprint compared to fossil-based products, according to the company.
The project is designed to support the direct decarbonization of sectors that are otherwise difficult to electrify. E-methanol produced at the facility will also be used in industrial processes traditionally reliant on fossil-based methanol.
