A major wildfire continued to rage Tuesday on the Greek island of Chios, according to local media.

The blaze has been burning for three consecutive days and is active on two major fronts. Public broadcaster ERT reported that the flames reached close to the village of Lithi and its nearby beach, damaging crops and forested areas.

Strong winds have exacerbated the danger, prompting authorities to issue an evacuation order, ERT said.

With additional firefighting units arriving from Athens, Thessaloniki, Kavala and Lesvos, more than 440 firefighters – supported by dozens of volunteers, at least two planes and six helicopters – are working to extinguish the fire, according to the broadcaster.

Authorities have declared a state of emergency on the island.
