Finland prepares new military aid package for Ukraine, worth over $165M

ATHENS

Finland is preparing a new military aid package worth €143 million (approximately $165.9 million), local media reported on Tuesday evening.

The package, whose final approval by the government and the president is expected soon, would be the 29th tranche and bring the total value of Finnish defense aid to Ukraine to €2.8 million, reported public broadcaster YLE.

According to Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen, this new package will include defense equipment manufactured in Finland.

"Finnish equipment is of high quality, and it has been proven to work in harsh conditions,” he said.

As with previous military aid package announcements, the Defense Ministry did not disclose the contents, method of delivery, or schedule of its latest military materiel shipment due to operational concerns and to ensure its safe arrival.

After decades of opposition to joining the military alliance, Finland in April 2023 became a member of NATO, some 13 months after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Finland has the longest border of any NATO country with Russia: 1,300 kilometers (808 miles).

In 1939-1940, Finland fought and lost a three-month war against the USSR, which sent its forces across the Finnish border early in World War II.
