LONDON

A 53-year-old white British man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he drove a car into a crowd during Liverpool's Premier League victory parade that left 50 people injured.

Merseyside Police confirmed Tuesday that the suspect remains in custody and is being questioned in connection with the incident, which took place on Monday when a car drove into a crowd of people gathered to celebrate in Liverpool.

The crash led to 50 people being treated in hospitals across the region. Eleven of those remain in the hospital, though police say all are in a stable condition and appear to be recovering well.

During a press conference, Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill said the man had also been detained on suspicion of other serious motoring offenses.

"We have arrested a 53-year-old man from West Derby on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offenses, and driving while unfit through drugs," she said.

"He remains in custody, where he is being interviewed."

Police say the driver was able to gain access to the road by following an ambulance that had been responding to a medical emergency.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: "The driver of the car was able to access the road after following an ambulance that was trying to reach someone who had had a suspected heart attack."

King Charles said he was "deeply shocked" by what happened. Prince William, who is the patron of the Football Association, also released a statement, saying: "What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy."

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and have appealed for any witnesses or footage from the scene to come forward.
