Nicusor Dan sworn in as Romania’s new president
Romania must strengthen strategic partnership with US, Dan says in inaugural parliament address

ATHENS
Nicusor Dan, a pro-West centrist, was officially sworn in as Romania’s new president on Monday.
The former mayor of Bucharest won the presidential election on May 18 in a closely watched runoff, defeating right-wing populist rival George Simion with 53.6% of the vote.
Speaking during his oath-taking ceremony at the Romanian Parliament, Dan emphasized the need for a deep reform process.
“It will not be about the past, it is about the immediate future of Romania, and it is not about political calculations, it is about the national interest,” he said.
“The Romanian state needs a fundamental change.”
Highlighting the significant challenges the country faces, including a high budget deficit, Dan called for the formation of a coalition government supported by a parliamentary majority.
On foreign policy, he stressed that Romania must strengthen its strategic partnership with the US and actively participate in EU decision-making processes.
Dan was elected after Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the results of the previous vote, following allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference.
In Romania, the president serves a five-year term.
