Three Syrian security personnel were killed and several others wounded Sunday in an explosion that targeted a police station in the city of Al-Mayadin, located in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Citing an unnamed local source in the Deir ez-Zor countryside, the agency reported that the blast was believed to have been caused by a car bomb.

The source said the explosion resulted in three deaths and a number of injuries. No further details were provided.

The circumstances of the attack remain unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility so far.

Initial investigations confirmed the explosion was caused by a car bombing, according to Khalil Abdel Moneim Al-Ayyoub, head of the Al-Mayadin district. He said the blast killed three general security members and wounded several others.

Al-Ayyoub added in remarks shared by the Deir ez-Zor Governorate Telegram channel that security forces rushed to secure the explosion site and complete the investigations. He vowed to punish those responsible for the attack.

Following the fall of former President Bashar Assad’s regime in December 2024, the southern areas of Deir ez-Zor province came under the control of the new administration’s forces, while the northern areas remain under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.
