Risks of unregulated AI one of biggest challenges: Expert
'Bias, discrimination and privacy issues are the main concerns in AI ethics,' Yusuf Sinan Akgul says

ISTANBUL
Yusuf Sinan Akgul, the dean of Gebze Technical University's Engineering Faculty, said on Wednesday that as AI improves, the ethics issue is becoming more and more challenging to deal with.
"Bias, discrimination, and privacy issues are the main concerns in AI ethics," Akgul said during his speech at the DevSecOps Days Istanbul Conference.
He noted that although organizations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and UNESCO have made some regulations on AI that include recommendations and principles, they are not as good as the EU's AI Act.
Akgul explained that human centricity, transparency, explainability, accountability, and privacy constitute the main frameworks for global AI ethics.
"The EU's AI Act is the first comprehensive AI regulation based on risk classification," he said.
From unacceptable risks to minimal risks, the act regulates the AI actions.
Akgul stated that the EU enforces the rules by imposing major fines for offenses based on their risk assessment, as well as market bans and reputational damages.
"Major challenges to the AI ethics include adopting DevSecOps to ethical AI, avoiding overregulation, and technical issues," he added.
The third edition of the DevSecOps Days Istanbul Conference, which brings together experts, sector representatives, software engineers, and cybersecurity professionals, began at Borsa Istanbul on Wednesday.
The event is organized under the theme "AI for DevSecOps," underscoring AI's role in the development, security, and organization processes.
The two-day program will host numerous panels, discussions, and workshops for DevSecOps (development, security, and operations) practices and processes, as well as cybersecurity issues and AI security. Anadolu serves as its global communications partner.
