US ends temporary protected status for Haiti
Termination will be effective on Sept. 2, says Department of Homeland Security

WASHINGTON
US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem on Friday announced the termination of temporary protected status for Haiti.
The temporary protected status designation for the country expires on Aug. 3, and the termination will be effective on Sept. 2, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.
“This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary,” the department's spokesperson said in the statement.
The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough that it is safe for Haitian citizens to return home, the spokesperson added.
According to the statement, Noem's decision was based on a US Citizenship and Immigration Services review of the conditions in Haiti and in consultation with the Department of State.
