China on Tuesday called for enhanced security cooperation among Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states during a meeting in Beijing.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with leaders of foreign delegations during the 20th Meeting of Secretaries of the Security Councils of SCO nations.

Han said that Beijing has advocated a “common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security concept” that has been supported by various countries.

“In the face of a world full of changes and chaos, China is willing to work with all SCO member states to uphold multilateralism and achieve lasting security, uphold the spirit of the rule of law and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results,” he noted.

He emphasized Beijing’s readiness “to uphold equality and solidarity and achieve common governance, and deepen cooperation and enhance capacity, so as to further play the role of the SCO in maintaining security and stability.”

Representing the foreign delegations, Kazakhstan Security Council Secretary Nurda Uletov and Belarusian Security Council State Secretary Volfovich conveyed their gratitude for China’s role as the current rotating chair of the SCO and expressed their enthusiasm for collaborating to address security challenges.

The SCO, an intergovernmental organization, was established in Shanghai on June 15, 2001, by six countries: the People’s Republic of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
