A total of nine companies secured £26 million of government funding to advance the rollout of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) in the U.K., the government announced on Thursday.
The country's largest carbon capture project to date, Tata Chemicals Europe’s plant, is one of the recipients given £4.2 million towards the construction.
The facility, when operational by 2021, will remove 40,000 tonnes of carbon emission from the atmosphere each year, the equivalent of 22,000 cars.
Between £170,000 and £7 million has been assigned to the selected projects as part of two programs - the £20 million Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCUD) program and the £24 million Call for CCUS Innovation program.
Drax Fuel Cell Biogenic Carbon Capture Demonstration will be given £500,000 and Origen Power Oxy-Fuelled Flash Calciner Project will receive £249,000 under the CCUD program along with Tata Chemicals Europe’s plant.
The remaining six projects are set to receive funding under the CCUS Innovation program.
