German chancellor sees ‘no signs for quick end to war in Ukraine
‘What we are currently experiencing in Ukraine, and with Russia, makes me somewhat concerned about the coming days, weeks, and perhaps months, says Friedrich Merz

BERLIN
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday that there are currently "no signs" for a quick end to the war in Ukraine following the phone call between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which failed to yield progress in the peace talks, according to press reports.
"There are currently no signs that this war will end quickly. What we are currently experiencing in Ukraine and with Russia makes me somewhat concerned about the coming days, weeks, and perhaps months," said Merz in Berlin, according to Munich-based daily Merkur.
"It was important to me that we send a signal from Germany very quickly that we want to make more of an effort than before to act in coordination with our European partners, but also, wherever possible, in coordination with our American partners," he was quoted by the daily as saying.
According to Merz, everything is currently being done through diplomatic channels to bring the war in Ukraine closer to an end.
He emphasized that it is important for Germany to play an "active, supportive, and strong" role in the diplomatic efforts.
In response to Pope Leo XIV's offer to mediate in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Merz expressed hope for constructive talks between the warring factions.
