Greece expects all NATO allies to do their part in ‘burden-sharing’: Greek premier

ATHENS

Greece on Wednesday stressed that it expects all NATO allies to do their part in defense “burden-sharing.”

Speaking to the press in The Hague on the margins of the NATO summit, Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis said his country currently spends over 3% of its GDP on defense and hailed that allies agreed to significantly increase their defense spending.

“So, I welcome the decision that might be taken by the summit (in this direction). I hope that all member states will do their part. Because, at the end of the day, this is an alliance that is based on trust and on fair burden-sharing,” he said.

Pointing out the geographical location and proximity of Greece to the Middle East, Mitsotakis welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, brokered by US President Donald Trump.

He also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, which will stop the killings and allow entry of humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian enclave.

“This is an important component of a permanent solution to the problem of instability in the region,” he said.
