Global crude steel production dropped 3.8% to 158.8 million tons in May compared to the same month last year due to a sharp decline in China and Japan, according to data Tuesday from the World Steel Association.
Production in China, the world's largest crude steel producer, fell 6.9% to 86.6 million tons in May.
Japan also fell 4.7% to 6.8 million tons.
Crude steel production increased 1.7% to 7 million tons in the US and 5% to 2.7 million tons in Brazil.
India's production rose 9.7% to 13.5 million tons and Iran climbed 4.5% to 3.4 million tons.
In May, crude steel production fell 6.4% to 3 million tons in Germany and 6.9% to 5.8 million tons in Russia.
Meanwhile, Türkiye's crude steel production fell 2.8% to 3.1 million tons in May compared to the same period last year.
