Iran's supreme leader appoints new armed forces chief of staff in wake of Israel's assassination
Maj. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi is appointed to post, succeeding slain commander Mohammad Bagheri

ISTANBUL
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has named Maj. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi the new chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, official news agency IRNA reported Friday.
Mousavi’s appointment came following the assassination of his predecessor, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, by Israeli airstrikes early Friday.
Maj. Gen. Ali Shademani was also appointed the new commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Construction Headquarters, succeeding Commander Gholam Ali Rashid, who was also killed in the overnight attacks, IRNA said.
Israel launched a sweeping military operation against Iran early Friday, with 200 planes targeting its nuclear program and long-range missile capabilities.
Senior military officials and nuclear scientists were killed in the attack.
