China and India offer “opportunities for each other’s development," the Chinese foreign minister has said, according to an official statement.

The two sides should adhere to the “important consensus” that Beijing and New Delhi “pose no threat to one another, and are partners rather than rivals,” Wang Yi told Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during a meeting in Beijing on Monday.

Doval, also the special representative on the China-India boundary question, is on a visit to China to attend the 20th meeting of the security council secretaries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The trip to Beijing by Doval was the first by a top Indian official since New Delhi’s latest hostilities with Pakistan last month.

The hostilities between Islamabad and New Delhi came amid a thaw in China-India relations which saw normalization after border tensions in the Ladakh area of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir had spiraled down ties between the two Himalayan neighbors.

“The two countries should also adhere to the direction of good-neighborliness and friendship, strive for a mutually beneficial and win-win prospect, demonstrate the historical wisdom of the two ancient civilizations, properly handle sensitive issues, and maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas,” Wang said, according to China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian.

A statement from New Delhi said both sides reviewed recent developments in bilateral ties and “underscored the need to promote the overall development of the India-China bilateral relations, including by fostering greater people-to-people ties.”

Doval “emphasized the need to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations to maintain overall peace and stability in the region,” the statement said.

The duo also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Wang’s meeting with Doval comes as at least 750 Indian pilgrims, after a hiatus of five years, resumed Kailash Mansarovar Yatra -- pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake -- to visit Tibet in southern China.

The pilgrimage -- through the Indian state of Sikkim passes through Nathu La into Tibet -- was halted due to COVID-19.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is also scheduled to visit China to attend the SCO defense chiefs summit in the eastern Qingdao city.
